• Hydrochlorothiazide is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). Hydrochlorothiazide is also used to treat fluid retention (edema) in people with congestive heart failure, cirrhosis of the liver, or kidney disorders, oredema caused by taking steroids or estrogen
